Genesee Brew House in Rochester: What to expect on your visit

genesee brew house

The first annual Tap It Forward Festival takes place outside the Genesee Brew House, featuring beer from breweries across New York State, live music, food trucks and more. The festival is a celebration of Genesee’s dedication to our community, and takes place on a day when the entire brewery was shut down so employees could volunteer their time on various community projects. Genesee establishes High Falls Brewing Company as its craft brewery subsidiary.

People & Culture

The brew house is inside a two-story building just north of downtown Rochester. Located adjacent to the main Genesee brewery, the brew house offers the chance to sample their beers and learn more about the company’s history. And there's a pilot brewery, where Genesee experiments with new recipes and produces craft beers — some just for the brew house pub and others sold in limited release to off-premises accounts. Walk into a bar anywhere in the Northeast and ask for “Jenny,” and you’ll likely get a pint from New York State’s oldest brewery. Since 1878, The Genesee Brewery has brewed the same flagship Genesee Beer — also known as “Genny” beer — at its Rochester brewery.

It's a bright, refreshing golden ale that's perfect for cooling off during summer's hottest days and sultriest nights. Opened in 1878, Genesee Brewery (referred to as Genny by many locals) is one of the most popular breweries in the state producing a variety of beer styles. Since 2012, Genesee has run a brew house in a building that was once part of the original brewery campus and is located directly adjacent to the Genesee River.

Genesee Brewery's three-story Keg Tree is a holiday tradition that shouldn't be missed. Throughout the season thousands of beer lovers descend upon... The Wehle family first stepped into the business in 1916 when Louis A. Wehle accepted the position of brewmaster and became the youngest person to hold that position in New York. That same year, Louis’s wife gave birth to their firstborn, Jack Wehle, on the property of the brewery.

Customers who want more options can grab a drink from the brew house's upstairs bar. To kick off the summer, Genesee Brew House is transforming its beer garden into a tropical oasis, complete with special décor and menu. In September, 2016 NAB announced on an expansion and redesign project. This is a place where honest people have brewed honest beers for generations. Today, more than 500 employees focus on crafting and bottling quality beers everyday. FIFCO purchases NAB, injecting the company with its Triple Bottom Line philosophy of people, planet, profits.

The Aqueduct Spring Brewery—Rochester’s first brewery—opens. By the end of the 19th century, 50 breweries open in Rochester, a reflection of the city’s vibrant German heritage. After spending 5.5 years exploring Pennsylvania, Jim discovered a love for New York and is excited to spend time exploring this great state and uncovering the best things to do here. However, if I’m being perfectly honest, I don’t find the beer at the Genesee Brew House very good.

He’d been brewing there since 1967, making him the brewer with the longest tenure at the company. And while he did take a three-year leave of absence to serve in the military, he came back and created Honey Brown, a golden amber lager with a malty flavor. Now only occasionally available, the beer itself was the first Genesee beer brewed with top-fermenting ale yeast, one that the brewery acquired from England that year and would go on to gain notoriety as Genesee’s proprietary yeast. It was used in the brewing of all Genesee’s ales from that day forward. Dundee's Honey Brown, which has proven to be one of their most popular brews.

The 18th Amendment to the Constitution passed in 1919, and while Genesee was forced to close, Louis Wehle took up a new career as a baker. His business was so successful that he was able to sell it in 1929 for $1.3 million, which he then used to purchase the old Genesee Brewery as well as a neighboring brewery just in time for the repeal of Prohibition. He even hired as many of the former Genesee employees as he could. The original location in Rochester underwent a $50 million revamp in 2017. Curious fans came to watch the tanks on their journey until they reached the brewery. The Kolsch style is traditionally served in a glass called a stange.

(WKBW) — Genesee Brewery's Ruby Red Kolsch is a fan favorite and it has announced that Mango Peach Kolsch has been crafted as the "perfect summer match" to Ruby Red. Beer was a booming business in Rochester long before Genesee showed up. In 1857, one of the many breweries landing in the city, Reisky & Sky, opened its own saloon and bowling alley. This was the location that local entrepreneur Mathius Kondolf purchased and renamed Genesee Brewing in 1878. Its bar will serve the brewery's popular Ruby Red Kolsch along with its successor, Tropical Pineapple Kolsch, now in its second year. Another option will be Captain's Mix, a combination of the two.

The tasting bar is open Monday through Thursday 11am–10pm, Friday & Saturday 11am–11pm, and Sunday 11am–10pm and features a flight of four different beers for $10. You may also purchase growlers and crowlers to enjoy our beer at home. "Our Specialty line has quickly gained a cult following, specifically our Kolsch beers," said Tiffany Benning, brand manager for Genesee. "Our brewers love crafting new brews! We like to call Mango Peach Kolsch Ruby Red Kolsch's perfect summer match." In 2019, John Fischer retired from his position as Genesee’s corporate brewmaster.

Along with this traditional American pale lager, the brewery is perhaps best known today for its Genesee Cream Ale, which set the standard for an original American beer style. In December 1984, it purchased the Fred Koch Brewery of Dunkirk, New York. At the time The Fred Koch Brewery was owned by Vaux Breweries of Sunderland, England.[11] In the previous year Koch sold about 55,000 barrels of beer, compared with Genesee's 3.2 million. Genesee transferred the brewing of Koch's brands to Rochester which it continued through the 2000s.
